KNOW MENDELEY

"Citation" is an important element in a scientific writing. Often beginners, students, students and the academic community in general, get caught up in unintentional plagiarism because they are not careful in making a citation. Therefore, the existence of a software that functions as a "citation & reference manager" is a necessity. With the software in question, each writer can identify the quality and authenticity (read trace) of each reference used. Besides that with the "citation & reference manager", the author can process the reference documents that are owned, make groupings based on certain topics / categories, as well as retrieve the metadata contained in the document.

Nowadays there are a lot of emerging "citation & reference manager" software that offer various features that make it easy for writers and supervisors to track the authenticity of references used by their students. One of the "citation and reference manager" software which recently caught the attention of many parties was Mendeley.

Mendeley is a software whose birth was inspired by an effort to integrate the "citation & reference manager" into a social network. With this kind of network, researchers in various parts of the world can collaborate and share research data.

Mendeley software is currently available in 2 (two) versions, Desktop Edition and Institutional Edition. Mendeley Desktop Edition (hereinafter referred to as Mendeley only) is software "citation & reference manager" that can be obtained free of charge (not paid) and is very compatible with MS Word word processing programs (2003,2007,2010), Mac Word (2008, 2011), Open Office / Libre Office (3.2), and Bib Tex.

Some features of Mendeley's mainstay include:

1. Can run on MS Windows, Mac, or Linux.
2. Displays metadata from a PDF file automatically.
3. Backup and synchronize data from several computers with online accounts.
4. Smart filtering and tagging.
5. PDF viewer with annotation and highlighting capabilities.
6. Import documents and research papers from external sites (eg PubMed, Google Scholar, arXiv, etc.).
7. Integration with various word processing software such as MS Word, Open Office, and Libre Office.
8. Social networking features.
9. iPhone and iPad app.
10. Free web storage of 2 GB which can be used as online backup.

Besides that, the settings and management of downloaded files are very easy to do with "drag and drop", so that it feels very user friendly. However, it does not mean that Mendeley does not have weaknesses. Mendeley will upload all files on the local hard disk to the Mendeley web site, so that if we get these files from paid journals like ScienceDirect, ProQuest, ClinicalKey, of course, there will be a bit of a problem, especially with access rights to those files.
